Microsoft Open XML - a one-way standard?

It will be interesting to see how many competing implementations of MS Open XML we're going to see in the future. Since the specification is more than 6000 pages long it will be a huge task to implement. Some estimates about how long it will take can be found in this blog post by Andrew Shebanow.
