I got a Macbook Pro!

So, I had the option to get a Macbook at a quite good price so I now own a 13" Macbook Pro. I haven't got any experience with OS X until now (well I do own an iPhone, but that doesn't quite count) and I would like to change that and get my own impressions of OS X.

The hardware is sexy, it's truly nice and beats all other laptops I've played with. It's very quiet, the battery life is pretty good and the screen is nice.

Until now I've never liked trackpads and clearly preferred a trackpoint like on the excellent Thinkpad laptops, however the big multi-touch trackpad on the Macbook have convinced me - trackpads, when done properly, works very well!

As for the software part, OS X is generally quite nice. It starts and shuts down quickly and is aesthetically very nice. It's not perfect though - I personally prefer the Windows 7 taskbar over the OS X dock. I find the dock a bit "fuzzy", making it harder than neccesary to find the application you want to launch. I also think it window manager could use some work. If I have several windows of the same program open, I can't easily switch between those windows with CMD+TAB.

That's my current experience with my Macbook Pro and OS X, I'm still learning of course so some of my complaints might simply be lack of knowledge on my behalf :)

Mikkeller - Beer Geek Brunch Weasel - Islay Edition: An extreme version of the famous "pooh beer". As the name implies, this has been aging in whisky barrels for 2½ months and that certainly makes a difference - the whisky is very obvious so if you enjoy a good single malt, this beer is for you! Sadly it will likely be hard to find and it's not exactly a cheap beer either...

Apollo - Klovn: I bought this mostly for the curiosity of it's name which refers to a danish tv-serie (which I rarely watch). I think I will rarely if ever buy and taste this beer again. Not that it's bad, but it certainly isn't anything special either.

I visited the beer festival in Copenhagen last weekend and tasted these (and more, but I can't remember which ones...) beers:

Aecht Schlenkerla Rauchbier Märzen: The beer that sets the standard for smoked beers. I've had it several times before, but this was the first time I had it on tap.

Mikkeller - Beer Geek Brunch Weasel: Tasted this before on bottle, an amazing beer IMHO and certainly not worse on tap :D

Brouwerij De Molen - Hemel & Aarde Bruichladdich Barrel: Very nice beer!

Håndbryg.dk - The Old Burned Wooden Tree: Loved it!

Mikkeller - Imperial Tart Frambozen Stout: Interesting beer - like drinking raspberry youghurt ice cream :)

Djævlebryg - Originale: Pretty darn decent beer.

Fat Cat - Amber Ale - Nice and easy to drink.

Avery - Maharaja: Very nice IPA

Great Divide - Hercules: Another very nice IPA

Nørrebro Bryghus - Old Odense Ale: Strange, sour beer, didn't really like this one.

Det Lille Bryggeri - Chili Øl: First time I've tasted a chili beer and I think this one had a bit too much chili in it for my taste.

Midtfyens Bryghus - Double IPA: Yet another good IPA - seems there's plenty of those :)

De Molen - Heaven & Hell: Fantastic beer!

Iphone 3G - further impressions

I've now had the phone for about a month and I still quite like it. There are of course some things that I would have liked to be better and things that are quite nice:

1. The battery life is less than impressive. In fact, it's quite bad I think and it's certainly something that should be high on Apple's list to improve.
2. I would like the contact search bar to be always be visible/available at the top.
3. The weather app should give me a more detailed weather forecast for the day.
4. By default, the calendar doesn't add an alarm when you create an appointment. I want an alarm to go off by default 30 min. before.
5. Safari is by far the best browser I've tried on a phone.
6. The camera sucks, but that's more or less to be expected.

That's about what I could think of right now, it is primarily a list of things that annoys me. Hopefully Apple will improve at least some of them.

iPhone 3G first impressions.

I've had a Nokia phone for a while and have been resonably happy with it. I can make phone calls, send text messages (SMS) and the calendar works pretty well. I've previously been saying that I didn't really have that much interest in the iPhone for 2 reasons:
1. I have pretty basic demands (see above) for my phone, I don't really use most of the more advanced features.
2. I thought the iPhone was a bit too big. I want a phone that fits easily in my pocket and I thought the iPhone would be too big for that.

Since then, Apple have made the iPhone 3G and several friends (that bought it) have showed it to me and let me play with it. All in all I came away impressed enough that I bought my first Apple gadget/device ever.

There is no doubt that Apple have created a very nice gadget and in many ways leapfrogged the competition. The hardware is quite nice and the design is, as with most other Apple hardware, impressive. I'm sadly not particularly impressed with the battery life.

The interface is also very nice, I'm already quite fond of the way it handles text messages (SMS) for example and the other applications seem to be nice as well. I haven't had the iPhone long enough to really say much more about the applications than that. It doesn't support MMS's though, which I find quite odd, though it doesn't really bother me. I don't really use the camera in my phone (I have a good DSLR) and sending lousy pictures to my friends isn't exactly high on my list of important features.

Not all is good though. First, to activate the iPhone, you have to install iTunes on your Mac or Windows PC, connect it to that. I don't know whether this is really Apple's decision or not, but it's stupid. I hate lock-ins and this is one of them. Why? Because it's always the customers that looses. Furthermore, my primary desktop is running Kubuntu Linux - is iTunes available for Linux? Of course not.

For me though, the biggest issue with the iPhone is that I can't sync the calendar as I want. I can't even easily move my current calendar entries to the iPhone. I've used zyb.com for quite some time to sync my contact list and my calendar. They support loads of phones, you have to have a pretty rare phone for them to not support it. their service makes it very easy to switch to a new phone and you always have a backup of your contacts and your calendar in case you loose your phone. It's a simple, great service and I highly recommend it. You can use zyb.com to sync your contacts on your iPhone, but for some reason, Apple haven't implemented SyncML for the Calendar so you can't sync that - BUMMER! It seems, more or less the only way for me to get my current calendar entries copied over is to install Outlook, sync my old Nokia phone with that and then sync my iPhone with Outlook through iTunes. That's hardly optimal, especially not since I don't use Outlook. It also means I will probably have to live with my calendar not being sync'ed.

Apple: PLEASE, implement SyncML for the calendar, NOW!

All in all, I have to say that it is a very nice phone so far. I really, really would like to see the calendar sync fixed and the battery life is less than impressive to be honest.
